The homemade snack guide
How to stock a snack-ready pantry, pack snacks for school, work and travel, and store everything so it stays fresh and crunchy.
Stock a snack-ready pantry
Grains
Popcorn kernels, rolled oats, crackers, tortilla chips.
Tins & jars
Chickpeas, black beans, tahini, salsa, nut or seed butter.
Dried fruit & seeds
Raisins, apricots, cranberries, pumpkin and sunflower seeds.
Flavour
Smoked paprika, cumin, cinnamon, garlic powder, good salt.
Packing snacks that travel well
- Use small reusable containers so crunchy and soft foods stay separate.
- Keep dips cold with a small ice pack in an insulated bag.
- Stop apples browning with a squeeze of lemon on the slices.
- Check school rules on nuts and seeds before packing.
- Pack a napkin; dusty popcorn seasoning gets everywhere.
Lunchbox formula
One crunchy item + one fruit or veg + one creamy dip or cheese + a small sweet treat. Rotate a different option in each slot every day and the week never gets boring.
How long homemade snacks keep
| Snack | Store | Keeps for |
|---|---|---|
| Popcorn | Airtight jar, room temperature | Up to 1 week |
| Roasted chickpeas | Loosely covered jar, room temperature | 2–3 days (re-crisp in the oven) |
| Hummus | Covered, in the fridge | 4–5 days |
| Oat bars | Airtight tin, room temperature | Up to 1 week; freeze for 3 months |
| Trail mix | Airtight jar, cool and dark | Up to 2 weeks |
| Cut fruit and veg | Covered, in the fridge | 1–3 days |
Keep dairy-based dips and cut produce chilled, and don’t leave them out for more than two hours.
